BALTIC Watches was launched via Kickstarter in 2017 with our two first watches : The Bicompax & HMS, both inspired by the 40's step-cases watches. The idea to make vintage inspired watches didn't come from anywhere. Nothing would happen with a family story that made this possible.
The founder Etienne Malec has inherited a collection of watches from his father that he didn't had the chance to know. His father extensively recorded his watches in a journal, keeping track of every one that passed through, with price paid, price for selling, what he traded it for. Being immersed in this journal and this collection was the beginning of a passion story that started more than 15 years ago and has been great help to build a vision making watches today.
For the first collection, the inspiration was the timeless simplicity found in the ?0s iconic stepcases watches. We aimed to create a simple watch, well proportioned with a special attention to the detail which remind the 40's. One is a three-hand automatic (the HMS 001), powered by the Miyota 821A. The other is a hand-wound chronograph (the Bicompax 001), featuring the Seagull ST19. We do all the assembly and QC in France near Besançon to be able to control every watches properly.
In late 2018, BALTIC has introduced a new diver range called the « Aquascaphe » based on midcentury dive watches.
The Aquascaphe aim to be a real toolwatch using a double domed sapphire crystal and bezel, screw down crown, and 200 meters of water resistance. At 39mm diameter, 47 millimeters lug-tolug, and 12 millimeters thick, we wanted to create a comfortable toolwatch wearable at any occasion.
Though this is a new model, we didn't wanted to return to the drawing board entirely. Indeed, we wanted to create a common design language between this model and the past one, resulting in a similar mid-case design that allows you to mount the Beads of rice bracelet either on the Aquascaphe or on the previous models. (And the future ones!)
